Climbing Centre Duty Manager

Job Summary:

As part of a small multifunctional team, the role of Duty Manager is central to the effective running of the Centre. You will be responsible for the provision of a safe, fun and welcoming climbing environment. When on duty you will directly manage the day-to-day operations including the reception, café and shop with additional responsibilities including instruction, cleaning and route setting. The role will also include administration responsibilities, such as answering emails, scheduling and bookings.

Job Tasks:

You will be in charge of the centre when the manager is away, so your daily duties may be similar to those of the centre manager. This will include making sure the centre runs in a smooth and efficient way and responding to customers in a professional and polite manner. If there is a health & safety issue or a problem in the centre, you are responsible for instigating the correct procedures.

Skills Needed for this Job:

You will need to be an effective team player who is willing to do all sorts of jobs. Being flexible in your outlook will help you to become a valuable member of the team, as will be great with customers, who can sometimes be awkward and demanding.

Working Hours:

Shift work, evening and weekends, including some unsociable hours. Mainly around 30-40 hours per week.

Income & Benefits:

This can vary widely, dependent on experience, starting a minimum wage and going to up to around £20,000.  You will usually be able to climb for free at your centre, as a benefit.

In this role, you are almost always employed by the centre, so holiday pay and sick pay are included, and your tax and national insurance contributions are dealt with by your employer.

Training & Qualifications:

Ideally you will hold at least the following, although each centre’s requirements will vary, so check with centres before you embark on the qualifications.

  • CWA/CWLA/SPA
  • First Aid
  • FUNdamentals

Food hygiene can be very helpful, as most centres serve food or drinks from a cafe or main reception area.
